A Chicken Pox outbreak at the Hunts Bay Police Station in St Andrew has disrupted court proceedings, the country's top prosecutor revealed on Monday.

Director of Public Prosecutions Claudette Thompson confirmed the outbreak while in the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston, but did not release further details.

The disclosure came as the murder case for accused man Lennox Williams was called up. Williams, who is in custody at the Hunts Bay Police Station, was not brought to court because of the Chicken Pox situation.

His case has been postponed to April 13 next year.

Chickenpox, also called varicella, is a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). The virus spreads when someone with chickenpox coughs or sneezes, releasing infected droplets into the air, and through direct contact with the fluid from the chickenpox blisters, according to the World Health Organisation.

It said the most noticeable sign of chickenpox is an itchy rash that turns into small, fluid-filled blisters. The rash often starts on the scalp and face before spreading to the trunk and limbs.
