AK-47 sized in St James, man in custody

Cops in St James say they've taken another deadly weapon off the streets after seizing an assault rifle during an operation in Rose Heights on Tuesday.

According to the Mount Salem Police, the raid happened in the Farm Hill district between 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. During the operation, lawmen searched a house occupied by a man and reportedly found an AK-47 rifle with a magazine containing one round of 7.62 ammunition.

The man was taken into custody, but his identity is being withheld as investigations continue.

Police say the find is a significant step in their ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal firearms in St James, a parish that has been one of the country's most violent in recent years.
